25 Dec 2008 6:21 AM

Six people have been taken to hospital after a Christmas tree caught fire in Sydney.

Fire crews say the tree caught alight about 9 last night (AEDT) after lit candles were placed in it.

Six people aged between six months and 80 years were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The tree and presents were destroyed but the fire was contained to the lounge room of the Currans Hill home.

A NSW Fire Brigade spokesman says no one was seriously injured in the incident.
